Hordes of the Things in 10 mm.

This evening we decided to use my Warmaster miniatures to play HotT. Cavalry in Warmaster is 20x40 mm. so I put two Warmaster cavalry bases onto a 40x40 mm. base to represent one cavalry unit in HotT. To keep it all homogeneous, I put all infantry and flyers on 40x20 mm bases, and all mount, behemoths, gods, heroes and magicians on 40x40 mm. bases.
We could play without any problem and actually we had a lot of fun.

The first game was Orcs vs. Goblins!
The Orc army: 1 Hero, 1 Wb Gn, 5 Wb, 1 Kn and 1 God.
The Goblin army: 2 Magicians, 1 Hd Gn, 7 Hd, 2 Raiders, 1 Behemoth.

In the second turn the God of the Orcs appeared and charged a unit of scared goblin wolf riders (raiders) but couldn't kill it and at the next turn I rolled a one and the God disappeared as he came.

A 28 mm. River troll as God.
The Orcs enraged at the sight of his vanished god and charged madly out of the forest. The goblins also encouraged by the vision of the God disappearing, foolishly charge down the hill.

The Orc Warbands killed all the Goblin Hordes, and the Orc hero killed first one Goblin Shaman and then the giant. Game over and victory for the Orcs.
The second match was a Chaos army vs. a Pendraken Amazon army.
Chaos army: 1 Hero, 1 Magician, 1 Kn Gn, 1 Kn, 1 Beasts, 1 Bd, 2 Wb, 2 Flyers.
Amazon army: 1 Hero Gn, 1 Magician, 6 Wb, 2 Shooters.
The Pendraken Amazon army
I quickly moved my Beasts unit to the hill in the centre and there it held for several turns the six Amazon Warbands while my two units of Knights flanked and headed to the undefended Amazon Stronghold. But before they assaulted the Stronghold, the Amazon Hero(ine) General entered in a wood to attack my warbands and there was slain surrounded by my warbands and flyers. Game over and victory for Chaos.
The third battle was Chaos vs. Orcs, but regretfully we run out of time and we had to quit on turn 3.

Some pictures of Warmaster Chaos and Orcs forces

I finally decided to take some pictures of my never finished Orc and Chaos armies for Warmaster. Some figures were painted last year, but most of them were painted many years ago, when Warmaster was released.
All pictures are clickable.

The Goblins were the first Warmaster miniatures I painted
Then it came the Orcs
Command units
Wolf riders, chariots and boar riders
BOFA Goblins
Chaos Command units
Chaos Infantry
Dragon Ogres, Ogres, Trolls and Harpies
Knights and Beasts of Chaos

Dimachaerus nonsense

Spartacus has decided to quit the Thraex fighting style in favour of the Dimachaerus. Curiously, his first fight is against a Thraex, and soon he will realise how tough is life without a shield!

Spartacus to the right wielding two swords
Spartacus waits for the Thraex and then attacks and hits him in his belly but without wounding him. After that, Spartacus tries to outflank the Thraex and although he fails to do it, he still manages to hit him again, but again without wounding him thanks to the shield of the Thraex. The Thraex gives ground one more time and burns an extra die. All in all not a bad start for Spartacus.

Now the Thraex hits Spartacus and wounds him in the belly quite easily as he has no shield to protect himself. Following this, they exchange many blows and spend a lot of dice without any result (they draw for five consecutive rounds).

Looks like Spartacus is still getting used to his new fighting style as he gets hit repeatedly on his head without further consequences, and later wounded on his Upper Left Leg.
The Thraex has still half of his dice pool whereas Spartacus only has three dice left and so he decides to surrender and appeals for mercy to the moody crowd.

Spartacus has a minus one to his Rep for being wounded but a plus one for having more than one hundred Fame points, so he appeals for mercy with his normal Rep and passes two dice, which means the crowd wants mercy and the editor spares Spartacus. Phew!

Saved by a hair's breath, but better not depend on the whimsical crowd again just in case. Spartacus saved his life but didn't win any Advance or Fame points as he lost the match. Now he will have to wait a couple of months until his wound heal before fighting again.

The Shadow of Death

As a sacrifice to the gods to stop the persistent draught, a retired champion has been invited to Capua to fight once again in the arena. Theokoles the Shadow of Death, a Rep 9 vicious and infamous barbaric gladiator, now Rep 8 due to his life of retirement, who will be faced against two gladiators of the Batiatus schola: Crixus the murmillo, Rep 6 and current champion of Capua; and Spartacus the thraex, still Rep 5.

Theokoles' dice pool of 40 is a very scary thing to face. Spartacus and Crixus know that their only chance against such monster is working as a team and attacking him simultaneously.
.
-Shall we begin?!
The fight bursts abruptly and Crixus quickly receives a deep cut in his belly, forcing him to fall back and burning some more dice. The crowd maddens at the sight of the first blood.
Then Spartacus and Crixus attack at the same time and while Crixus distracts Theokoles, Spartacus smashes his sica on theokoles' head, leaving him stun and at their mercy!
Theokoles then receives a couple of scratches more but finally recovers without further damage, pushing back Crixus and severely slashing Spartacus' Upper Left Leg.
After that, there are three turns of savage fighting where Spartacus suffers a terrible cut in his chest and Theokoles two consecutive wounds on his right leg. Crixus stays safe behind his scutum whereas both Spartacus and Theokoles run out of their dice pool very fast.

Spartacus pauses a moment to catch his breath but Theokoles, despising his own fatigue, keeps brutally attacking both gladiators, and manages to strike again on Spartacus' wounded leg, almost maiming it. Spartacus is really tired and severely wounded. A deafening roar rises from the crowd in a mixed feeling of panic and joy; they are having glorious fun.
In one last effort, Crixus and Spartacus attack again Theokoles, who fiercely repulses Crixus and knocks Spartacus to the ground. Fortunately, Theokoles spends his last dice from his pool in this last effort, and falls to the ground spent and at the mercy of the gladiators, who quickly dispatch him.

All hail to Crixus, champion of Capua and bringer of the rain!
Well, this has not happened exactly as in the TV serial, but at least Spartacus still lives. He miraculously survived with only one remaining die in his pool! and so Crixus is still the fucking champion of Capua ;-)

The match resulted pretty exiting and I was sure Spartacus was to die on this day, but in the end and much to my relief, he escaped . He gained eight more Advance Points for a total of twenty six, so he has raised his Rep to six and gained a total of 130 Fame Points.

Nonetheless, he paid dearly for it and he will have to rest for a long time until all his wounds are restained.

Thraex versus Hoplomachus

After one month of resting, Spartacus is fully recovered and put to test in the arena against a Hoplomachus.
The first to strike at spear distance is the Hoplomachus, but Spartacus passing two more dice than him, manages to parry his attack.

In the next turn Spartacus tries to outflank him on his unshielded side but the Hoplomachus anticipates his movement, preventing the attack and making him to burn an extra dice.
In the third turn Spartacus attacks directly and pierces Hoplomachus' belly armour, wounding him seriously and knocking him down to the ground, where is quickly attacked again and forced to burn six dice.

Spartacus has the initiative again and attacks while the Hoplomachus is on the ground. This time hitting him in the chest and causing him instant death.

Piece of cake. Spartacus is getting more and more confident and the crowd cheers his name. Again he has gained a Corona and five more Advance points. He now has a total of 18 Advance Points and 122 Fame Points.
